I served in the United States Air Force with the 137th Air Base Group
stationed in Alexandria, LA in 1950 to 1952.
Alexandria Air Force base was re-activated in October (1950) shortly after the
beginning of the Korean War. Three National Guard Fighter Squadrons were
activated and moved to Alexandria in preparation for overseas duty. The
Fighter-Bomber Squadrons each flew F-84 Thunderjets. One squadron was from Atlanta, GA; one was from
Tulsa, OK and ours was from Wichita, KS. The Fighter Squadron had support
aircraft of a C-47 (Alias, the Gooney Bird,) and several T-6
Trainers. I became a crew chief of one or more of the T-6's. The number
depended upon how many planes were on the base, how many pilots were in
transition training, and somewhat upon how much time I had to spend doing KP.
In the Air Force the "T" stood for Trainers, "C" for Cargo,
"F" stood for Fighters, and "KP" stood for about anything
unpleasant including "Kitchen Police"!
